This is a collection of insights introduced and inspired by Alan Watts that I put together into a sequence for myself to meditate on regularly. The wisdom and insights from Zen and Daoism traditions that Alan Watts helped promulgate in 20th century has reached and impacted countless individuals. His speaches, books, programs live on in digital form and I am ever grateful for this.
In the beginning, there was the Dao.
Everything arises simultaneously, nothing exists by itself.
When someone uses their intellect in a game and starts winning, a less intelligent opponent will accuse them of cheating. Where is the line between skill and cheating for such an opponent? Lesser intelligence will always accuse greater intelligence as a means of self-preservation.
Gradual enlightenment is intended for the slow-witted, while sudden enlightenment is for the clever. Can you find a way to see your nature, the Dao, instantly? Through this moment? When you know this, this moment is the Dao. It is self-existent, without past and future. Eternal, neither appearing nor disappearing.
The flow of time does not exist. Spring does not become summer. First, there is spring, and then there is summer. You are not the same person who performed the previous action. The person present at this moment is not the one who will die.
Suffering exists, but not the one who suffers. Actions exist, but not the one who performs them. The Path exists, but not the one who walks it. Nirvana exists, but no one attains it.
The continuity of life is an illusion. In the present moment, there are no problems.
Death is not a problem.
Always act in accordance with the true nature of things.
